Bayern Munich have revealed that star winger Douglas Costa won’t be participating in this summer’s Olympic games as he is injured.
The 25-year-old suffered a muscule injury to his left thigh, which resulted in him missing the Copa America. He hasn’t been able to recover and apparently won’t do so in time to play a part in the Olympics.
The Brazilian was replaced by Kaka, who incidentally picked up an injury as well. Despite that fact, the former Shakhtar Donetsk man was still included in the Olympic squad for the Rio games, which run from the 5th to the 21st of July.
Bayern have confirmed that he won’t be playing in that competition either.
“I greatly regret this,”? Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club’s official website. “We all wanted Douglas to contest the Olympic Games in his home country, but the player’s health and fitness takes priority.”?
The German outfit has also gone on to say that the player was examined by the club’s medical unit on Monday and will continue to be assessed in the coming weeks as he maintains his sport rehabilitation process in the team facilities.
The Bundesliga winners will start their pre-season action on July 20th, with Carlo Ancelotti having taken over from Pep Guardiola.
The Italian will have to navigate through some tricky fixtures, with former clubs Real Madrid and AC Milan down to face Bayern, as well as Borussia Dortmund and Guardiola’s new club Manchester City.
