“?Liverpool have rejected an approach from Wigan Athletic for young midfielder Cameron Brannagan, stating that the player has a role to play for the Anfield side next season, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The newly-promoted Championship side were believed to be willing to pay in excess of £1m, however, they were turned down as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp views the 20-year-old as an important member of his first-team squad, stating that the player is not available for sale or loan.
Brannagan has also attracted interest from Middlesbrough, but Liverpool have made it clear that they believe their player’s future is at Anfield.
The Salford-born youngster made his full debut for Liverpool in a Europa League match against Bordeaux and went on to make nine first-team appearances, and made his fifth start in the last week of the Premier League against West Brom, triggering a re-negotiation clause in his contract.
Talks are expected between the club and the player’s representatives, with Brannagan set to agree a new long-term contract at the club on improved terms.
Brannagan is thought to have impressed Klopp with both his talent and his application. The academy graduate is likely to get plenty of game time in Liverpool’s pre-season fixtures with the Euro 2016 contingent of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Emre Can and Joe Allen not available for club duty.
Ironically, Liverpool are set to travel to the DW stadium for a pre-season game against Wigan on July 17th, where Brannagan will be hoping to cement his place as a viable backup to the Liverpool squad.
